PureVideo HD Gen2 still not prefect
April 2007, NVIDIA announced G84/G86. This also means the birth of PureVideo HD Gen2.

Comparing to PureVideo HD Gen 1, Gen2 has Video Processor 2, BSP Engine and AES128(The Advanced Encryption Standard) . With a higher efficiency video processor that can process Motion Compensation and Inverse Transform, BSP Engine decodes Entropy and AES128 decodes AACS, more lower the CPU usage while HD video playback.

It’s clear that PureVideo HD Gen2 already takes over all the H.264 decoding workload from CPU. That means full hardware decode/acceleration on even the most complicated Entropy Coding. With the technology even an entry level can has a smooth HD video playback. But please notice, except the latest G92-8800GT/GTS have PureVideo HD Gen2, other GTS/GTX/Ultra all using the old Gen 1.

But even PureVideo HD Gen2, can not provide full hardware decode for VC-1. This is not a mission that NVIDIA can not complete, NV thinks that today’s CPU is advancing enough to processing Bitstream Processing without a lag,so there is no necessary to add this function in PureVideoHD Gen2 and raise the total cost.
Although VC-1 is less complicated than H.264, but only 3/4 hardware decoding is not enough. In mainstream we still sense it takes about 30~40% CPU usage.
And NVIDIA’s rival is advancing. AMD integrate UVD(Universal Video Decoder) in Radeon HD2000. UVD can totally take over the VC-1/H.264 workload from CPU and have almost no CPU usage while in HD video playback. That’s why AMD can occupy entry level HD video playback market with its HD2000 series product.
Maybe because of the entry level market’s pressure, NVIDIA finally decide to roll our their PureVideo HD Gen 3.

@ Guilit
that’s only a few percentage @ celeron 430 so that’s nothing to worry about.

In the sentence “With the bandled different I/O metal backboard…” the third word should be “bundled.”
I’m sure it’s a artifact of translation, but I’d like to suggest using “CPU intensive” instead of “CPU sucking.” In the USA “sucking” has some rather vulgar connotations; i.e. when someone says something ’sucks,’ they’re not offering polite criticism.

Thanks for your suggestion! you konw, i saw some other reviews write like that, so i followed..
anyway, i am going to fix the words. Thanks Fred.

Nvidia can take the purevideo HD and EAT IT! It is clear in these tests that the nv cards require 300% more processor cycles than ati’s humble 2400. So i wouldn’t be so sure that nv can attack ati in the video department. As for mpeg2 you must really be the king of jerks to encode anything in mpeg2HD.You need 3 times more bandwidth for the same quality. And yes atis hd capabilities kick in whatever player you use. At least with bsplayer and klite megacodec pack i run hd 1080p videos with an ati2400pro and an intel E2160@2700mhz with just 1% cpu.
