The extra 16SP really boost performance of 8800GTS 512MB?

Now it is about time for you guys to go for a 8800GTS 512MB. The local retailer in your place may still have none of it, but in Newegg we can see lot’s of 8800GTS 512MB in stock.

Even in this time we still can not post our review. Coz we have lots of items in it and still running test now. So we decide to post the most important part of it, and we believe this is everyone like to read.

As you know, 8800GTS 512MB and 8800GT all based on G92, the difference is 8800GTS has 128SP while 8800GT has 112SP, and 8800GTS upgrade the clock from 8800GT’s 600/1800/1500MHz to 650/1944/1625MHz(core/mem/shader).

So how the extra 16SP benefits? this test is all about it. We use NiBiTor.v3.6 to modify 8800GT’s BIOS, overclock 8800GT to 8800GTS’ level, and compare two cards.

Test Bed:

Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9650 OC 400MHz X10
Asustek P5E3 Deluxe/Wifi-AP with 2GB Kingston DDR3-1066 6-6-6-18-1T
WD 3200YS 320GB
Zippy G1 600W
Windows Vista 32bit 6001 with ForceWare 169.12 beta with Modded .inf

In all situations, 8800GTS 512MB of course has a better performance. But in UT3 and COD4, 8800GTS only has little performance advantages. It seems the extra 16SP just did not help much.

Also in Crysis there is average 5.8% boost. But before OC the gap is 11.27%.

So that’s why 8800GTS 512MB should have a higher clock. What a easy way to earn money, NV!

so basically i give Nvidia/Evga 100 dollars for free?
    lol.
i will see how high this GTS overclock. if it can’t go passed 800 core i will return and wait for GT.
keep up the good work Jeff.

posted some info. will work on some more if i get requests.
but think i need to wait for watercooling or bios mod? to get more from the card.

It’s a cpu issue. I’ve got the same eVGA card running on a P965 board with a C2Duo E6420@3.2GHz and it makes right at 13K on 3DMark06 at default settings. Overclocking the card doesn’t make much difference, bumping the default 670/1944 to 725/2100 only increases my score to 13.25K. Dual cores running faster clocks (3.6-4GHz) can score 14-17K and fast quad core rigs post better results yet.

the 8800gt(512mb)=240$ 8800gts(512mb)=340$ which is 33% more in price estimately
but the performance boost of the gts over the gt is only 4%(in avarage according to the article) so you pay 33% more and get only 4% boost in benchmarks…thats bad Nvidia…:(
