[Review] Zotac GeForce 8400GS 256MB aka. G98

A closer look at Zotac G98-8400GS

Except for some G98-8400GS engineering examples in reviewer’s hands, we can not find any G98-8400GS in the market. But recently Zotac begins to ship out their G98-8400GS. And the card in our hand is Zotac’s 8400GS retail version.

The new G98 NVIIDA GeForce 8400GS 256MB by Zotac.

Zotac G98-8400GS is low profile design, suit for small form factor PC case, which is always prefered by many HTPC users.

The metal interface bar can be changed.

Pic says it all. Change the interface bar to fit your HTPC setup.

Low pass filtering circuit will make the signal of the analog output like VGA and TV-out better.

The G98-8400GS ES.

Zotac move the power module from reference board’s left to the right. Doing this can lower the power interferes to video signal output. The power uses solid capacitors and close circuit inductance. We belive with a heatsink, the card can run in fanless.

The Zotac 8400GS have a very high core/shader/memory clock: 650/1650/1800MHz. But the G98-8400GS ES we’ve reviewed is only 567/1000MHz.

The data is not very accure in GPU-Z.

The card uses Samsung 1.2ns GDDR3 memory chips.

We seldom see GDDR3 memory in low end card. But this 8400GS use GDDR3 as its graphic memory. the card uses totally 4 Samsung 1.2ns GDDR3 memory chips. The chip’s default clock is 833MHz, but the card setting is 900MHz, a little bit overclocked.

From the chip codes we can find out these chips are 16M*32bit. So the size is 16M*32bit/8=64MB. 256MB for a low end graphic is too good. Also we’ve find out the card is actually wasted lots of memory interface. The G98 only supports 64bit memory interface, but four 32bit memory is 128bit interface in total. What a waste.
