GeForce 9800 GX2 Dismantled

9800 GX2 will be delayed, but reviewers who got the card can not resist their happiness and leaking these dismantling pics:

The cooler have two sides. That means the two GPUs are standing face-to-face.

The backside of the cooler is almost the same.

Mother card. The smaller chip is a SLI bridge chip.

The bridge between mother card and daughter card.

Daughter card. The power module is the same with mother card, both 3+1 phases.

The core is G92-450. Will it even faster than 8800GTS-512MB’s G92-400?

The memory is K4J52324QE-BJ1A,1.0ns GDDR3 512Mbit memory chip.

The bridge chip is NP200-SLI.

Because it is a engerineering sample, so an extra wire show up…

…and connected to the SLI connector.

Rather interesting thing. But for what is that “SLI Chip”? SLI is native in G92 afair.
p.s. 3-d picture link is wrong and are missing 6,10,11. (though they exist ;) )

  2. Luke Says:

Of course they are delaying. :( The 3970×2 is a bust IMHO as it really only seems to beat the Ultra in 3dmark benchmarking at high res. I was really hoping the 3870 would be more of a performer so Nvidia would kick out the gx2 and g100 sooner :(

    G100 is now GT200.

Don’t you love how these “leaked” photos happen the same day the ATI x2 cards are for sale. And seeing the cobble-job wiring, this obviously was “leaked” from nvidia themselves.

As for the comment about the 3870×2 being a bust, I assume your smoking some funny cigarettes. Although basically its just a crossfire card, just like this Nvidia slap together job will be a SLI setup. At least the ATI card is all on one single board and required some thinking to design.

  6. Jeff Says:

The SLI chip is for bridging two G92-450 chips

This board looks nice but I hope it will have 2 DVI-Connections in the release-version.

    i agree “Tim”
This looks like a cut and paste design, Nvidia is not what they used to be, atleast Amd have the balls to make a better (more hard work) design.

Nvidia needs to start trying again and don’t act like money hungry idiots.
(people at nvidia ruins this business, and nvidias good name is gone.)

    NVIDIA……..NO THANKS.

This is not NVidia’s true next-gen gem. This is just a “Oh yeah, well, we can do that, too!” move at ATI’s 3870×2. Both ATI and NVidia have big guns coming out later this year. These dual-cards are just something to play around with until the real next gen comes along.

    Hiiiyoooo!

  12. Oscar Says:

And Ano and Tim. In my honest opinion this design is superior to a one board design. First off, the AMD cad is as big, only cools off of one side, and sure has an internal bridge but that doesn’t really matter, they still sew it together with a simple PCIe bridge chip. NVIDIAS design makes sence, the cooler cools from both sides, is symetrical, sucks air from 2 vents and spreads the hot compnonents over a larger surface. And we all know SLI vs Crossfire drivers, SLI wins anyday.

  13. steve Says:

the 2 board design isnt really a big deal, it just happens to be that way and as someone else mentioned nVidia is just doing these stop-gap chip updates to keep the battle going till the true next gen.

I think nVidia made a mistake but i think people are being to hard on em here what i think it was: when the first 8800s came out and held the crown for awhile things were good. Ati came out with the 2900 that wasnt well recieved. nVidia knew about Atis product releases and probably that the next release would be a real contender so they pulled their R&D and said hey give us something now to keep these gaming crack addicts satiated and they did with the G92 which seemed to be the new 9xxx series in an early release. Think about it how good is the performance from the 8800GT and GTS compared to the old 320 and 640 Gts’s? What if the release was pushed off until the die size was shrunk down like it was meant to be in the release of the 9800? can you imagine the speed increase then?

its just unfortunate labeling on nVidia’s part.

  16. Azaezel Says:

ATI Fanbois are just angry that ATI has given up on the ‘High End’ market. I don’t know if anyone saw it, but there was an interview with an ATI exec a few months back, and he basically said they’re not competing with Nvidia for the high end anymore, they’re concentrating on the midrange, and consumer level parts. This means more money from OEMs for ATI, which are where MOST of the dollars are spent as far as chips are concerned. This means that it’s unlikely that ATI will have the ’speed crown’, unless Nvidia just completely hoses things up, which they have not done for a long time. It’s possible, but unlikely. Look at the G94 chip… it’s a chip that equals, or beats the current ‘Low-High End’ solutions out there like the 8800 GT. In my neck of the woods, the 8800 GS is running around 220 bucks, and the new 9600 GT is giving near equivalent performance for $189 max (when it’s released obviously) The 9800 GX2, just like the 3870×2, is just a stopgap in the high end market for when the RV700, and G100 (or G96, or what have you) chips are released in June(?). At that point, we’ll see… I’d be willing to bet that the RV700 cards are at an incredibly good price VS performace ratio, and the G100/G96 chips are expensive, but yield the best results. June is when the big fight is going to be… this is just a minor skirmish.

  17. TC Says:

Apparently Azaezel and his nvidia fanboism isn’t aware of the fact that ATI already has the top end card.
