Compatibility issue: PowerColor HD3870 512MB GDDR3 and Asus P5N-T Deluxe

There is always an urban legend: NVIDIA motherboard didn’t get along well with ATI cards. We always think this kind of thing is only tales but we just met one today.

Our test bed have encountered a compatibility issue

When our PowerColor HD3870 512MB GDDR3 runs on Asus P5N-T Deluxe(nForce 780i), it hangs when we start 3D programs. At first we think it is some weird Vista issue, so we installed SP1 but the crash continues.

We try to update our BIOS to a newer version, but P5N-T Deluxe already flashed with the 0802 BIOS which released in Feb,5th 2008. Also our mobo driver is NVIDIA_bda_780iSLI_9.46WHQL and VGA driver is ATI_Catalyst_8.2_Vista32.

PowerColor HD3870 512MB GDDR3

We tried other ATI card, but no one has this problem:

P5N-T Deluxe + ATi reference HD 3870 X2, works fine.

P5N-T Deluxe + Sapphire HD 3850 512MB GDDR3, works fine.

P5N-T Deluxe + PowerColor HD3870 512MB GDDR4, works fine.

Also, we have tried PowerColor HD3870 512MB GDDR3 on Maximus Formula(X38)、and Foxconn P35A-S(P35),all works fine. The card just don’t work on P5N-T Deluxe, and both Asus and PowerColor did not give us a solid answer. Did you ever encounter this kind of issue before?

Wow, did you just become aware of this anomaly? It’s been common knowledge for sometime now. Although you use to consider this an urban legend but most users seen the disparity in 3d results from nvidia MB to an Intel MB which warrants concern. In this case it became an extreme were you were forced to admit the 2 (ati/nvidia) don’t mix in this combo of parts.

However, I would like to see another 780i MB tested and compare the results vs x38 MB. Lets see which MB yields better results with an ATI 3870. I challenge you to put this to the test!!!!

    Addition to the above^^^

Once the benchmarking is complete take the motherboards and compare the results using a 9600 GT. Lets see which MB a 9600GT performs better in, a 780i or x38.

With this sort of comparison, I am sure you will get people from all nations interested in this review as it’s never been done (to my knowledge). My idea with make you famous :)

After reading your article regarding “Follow-up to NVIDIA’s shady trick on 9600GT” I am no longer interested in any further comparison from this website.
