G80 VS G92: Med to high end GeForce GFX cards round-up!

â—† G80 products

From November 06 till now all the NV GeForce product are based on G80. Of course, in the near future G80 architecture will continue to live. Let’s count how many products are G80 based.

â–¡ Nov. 8, 2006, Geforce 8800GTX/8800GTS 640MB (G80)

Both GeForce 8800GTX and 8800GTS 640MB are the first G80 products. They are all targeting high end users. Comparing to 8800GTX, 8800GTS only have 96SP, memory interface is 320bit, and have a lower clock.

â–¡Feb. 12, 2007, Geforce 8800GTS 320MB (G80)

For market dividing purpose, NVIDIA released GeForce 8800GTS 320MB, all other specs are the same with 640MB 8800GTS.

â–¡ Apr. 16, 2007 Geforce 8600 GTS/GT/8500GT (G84/86)

G80 is too expensive, can not be accepted in the mainstream market. You know the mainsteam market demand is quite huge at that time, and 7600/7900 is old enough to retire. So NVIDIA chopped some spec off the G80 core and unveiled Geforce 8600 GTS/GT/8500GT (G84/G86).

â–¡ May 2, 2007 GeForce 8800 Ultra (G80)

ATI planing to launch R600 in the mid May, and NV suddenly start a preemptive strike by releasing 8800 Ultra (G80) in the early May. It is a successful product, in a long time it is the king of the performance.

â–¡ June 19, 2007 GeForce 8400 GS (G86)

To compete with Radeon HD 2400 series product, NV keep chopping their core and released 8400 GS. In their plan at first it is only for OEM market. But 8400GS is not a success because the Hardware decoding ability is weaker than its rival.

â–¡ Oct. 29, 2007 GeForce 8800 GT (G92)

After three month’s of silence, NV reflash their core technology by releasing GeForce 8800GT (G92). G92 built with 65nm processing, sounds more advance than G8x’s 80nm processing but it is still based on G80 architecture. Texture Unit ratio have been changed, and VP2 and related Video playback unit have been added in. The card’s performance is quite good, and it also can support full H.264 and 3/4 VC-1 hardware decoding.

â–¡ Dec. 12, 2007 GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB (G92)

After 8800GT(112SP)’s success, NVIDIA decide to release G92 without any SP chopped, that means 128sp totally. That’s 8800GTS 512MB. Not only the core keeps 128SP but the core clock and memory clock rated higher.

â–¡ Dec 12, 2007 GeForce 8800 GS (G92)

Originally, 8800GS is for OEM market only. Right After ATI Radeon HD 3850’s success, NV decide to release it as a temporary product. Compare to 8800GT, 8800GS has a lower memory interface and clock/shader frequency. Words have it that the card only have 150k globally. Nowadays there is only a few 384MB version 8800GS in the market.

â–¡ Feb 21, 2007 GeForce 9600 GT (G94)

Not only 8800GT 256MB but also 8800GS they all based on 8800GT 512MB, with the same amount of transistors the core keeps the high production cost. NV of course won’t use such a high production cost product to compete with AMD in mainsteam market. They need a GPU with low production cost. Though GeForce 9600GT’s new core is G94, but it is actually a 64 SP G80 chopped off.

â–¡ March 18, GeForce 9800 GX2 (G92)

For replacing the EOLed 8800 Ultra and compete with HD 3870X2,NVIDIA rolled out 9800GX2 in March. 9800GX2 is a dual GPU card. You can think it is a dual 8800GTS 512MB SLI bundle.

If i were to build a monster pc right now i’d much rather get three 9800 GTXs against two GX2s, and for about the same price.

Why o dont you use any AMD cards scores in the table like this??? 3870 3850 anyone??

Ajai, because it’s a G80 vs G92 article, and the ATI cards really suck wind when you enable AA/AF. Even the 3870X2 can’t stand up to G92 GTS. The HD3XXX series just cannot compete.

  5. max Says:

the only reason why the g80 gts 320mb did so bad was that it was not overclocked at all.
    What a shame.

Please remember that three 9800 gtx’s only produces about 1.5 teraflops of possible performance where two 9800 gx2’s produce 2 teraflops of performance. So u cant really even compare the two.

Plus the possibility to add another 9800 gx2 for a total of 3Gb of frame buffer and 3 teraflops of performance.

Thats not even comparing the number of stream processors available.

The teraflops talk is directly correlated with the number of stream processors. Where each card has 128 stream processors, the gx2’s having 256 stream processor per card, 3*256 = 768 stream processors, where the 9800 gtx (three of them) would only be 384.

Obviously there is the added cost:-)

    Steven,

You obviously know absolutely nothing about this. Stop lying and making shit up and google the facts quickly. You are spreading incorrect information and probably confusing people like yourself who actually did take the time to google before posting.
