IBM joined in, Top 5 server makers adopt Opteron
IBM has announced that it will adopt the quad-core AMD Opteron CPUs in their servers. HP was the first major server maker joined in this market on April 9. Dell and Fujitsu Siemens followed in the next week, and Sun joined earlier May. Accordingly, all the top 5 server makers have announced adopting Opteron in their servers.
The machines IBM will adopt Opteron in will be the x3455, x3655 and x3755. x3455 priced at $1,809 and support up to 48GB of memory, positioning at “technical and financial applications.” The $2,499 System x3655 will be positioning at “business performance computing and memory-intensive applications such as database, virtualization and dynamic web serving.” while the $3,407 System x3755 will support up to four sockets and be ideal for databases, virtualization environments and the like, according to IBM.
All three systems should become available next month.
