What we know about R700 aka HD 4870X2

Previous post states that R700 will show up in the market at the end of this month. Now the red forum Chiphell have once again post two spy pic of the upcoming product HD 4870X2. The first time R700 pics “leaked” are two pics without its cooler.
The HD 4870X2 looks just like HD 3870X2, but color scheme have changed from red to black. Digitime suggest AMD will open its production right to its AIB partners in August, so lots of HD 4870X2 un-reference version will be the second wave.
A post in TGDaily saying HD 4870X2 runs at 778MHz/980MHz(core/memory), but we don’t know its OC or not. AMD Austin Team shows off the card by dual HD 4870X2 Crossfire. It runs quite well in 3DMark Vantage and got a good score X12515.
Also there is some talks out there stating HD 4870X2 will be 499USD only. So, let’s wait for it.

[...] So, with the release of the 4850 and the 4870, talk has been going around about the 280 killer already which is basically two 4870 cores on one card (like the 9800GX2). info [...]

The first version is 2gb. Gonna be 500 and use GDDR5. AMD has confirmed this!

I wonder if it isn’t going to draw well over 100W in idle.

If HD4870 is $295 (best I could find) then this thing will be $499 for sure. Awesome if $449, but I’m worried on power consuming. I got a Zalman 850W (ZM850-HP) and it can do 950W just fine, but even so, power here costs A LOT!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:16 am
HD 4870 uses 219W in IDLE and 333W in 100% load
July 18th, 2008 at 8:09 am
Your Zalman 850W cannot do 950W. 850W with an 85% Efficiency (Which means its a hardcore PSU) will at best be able to do 722W continuous/850W Peak.
Also no card will draw over 300W at idle as 300W is the hard limit for PCIE 2.0 – 150W from the PCIE slot and 75W for each connector. Until PCIE 3.0 comes out there won’t be any 300W+ cards. The 4870 uses 245W at load and 90W at idle.
Do some research before spreading your “knowledge” everywhere.
