GTX 260 and HD 4870 dropped to the same price, Which one to buy?

This is the price trend from 6/16 to 7/4. We gain the date from eshop websites such as newegg, zipzoomfly, XFVideoCard and others. Since the prices are different in each site, we select the lowest price.

Generally, NVIDIA didn’t drop price in June, but fell suddenly on July 3rd & 4th. However, HD 4800 changed little over the half month.

The hotest battle in this price war should be GTX 260 and HD 4870. As of July 4th, GTX 260 has dropped to the same price as HD 4870. In fact, we found GTX 260 almost the same as HD 4870 in performance, but GTX 260 has advantages in NVIDIA’s drivers and industrial manufacturer supports.

So, NVIDIA pushes users to dilemma now and it’s difficult for users to choose between HD 4870 and GTX 260.

BTW, GTX 280 had dropped to the same price as the upcoming R700(4870 X2), although we couldn’t hope GTX 280 to beat R700.

DX 10.1 or not? With that powerfull expensive vga I think DX 10.1 support is needed.

  2. Tim Says:

Competition is always good, as it lowers prices. But like post#1 here said, DX10.1 is what makes the 4870 win. ATI has good driver updates each month. The 4870 doesn’t have enough quantities shipping yet for it to have the prices lowered.

  3. Tim Says:

I forgot to add, these cards are fast enough that they will be around for many games in the future, so DX10.1 IS important.

  4. Wig Says:

DX10.1? There are no games that support it, so why would they add it.

    GTX 260 Vs HD 4870

    DX10.1
    ray tracing
    hdmi audio 7.1
100% future proof (2+ years easy)
    ETC

HD4870 is allot faster than the GTX 260 by miles, what is this site talking about, check the bench marks by at least 2/3 sites and you will see there is a clear winner HD4870.. hell even the 4850 comes very very close to the GTX 260 wining almost over a quatre of the benches. PLEASE ANY1 BUYING A CARD FIRST LOOK AT BENCHES FROM 2/3/4 SITES B4 MAKING YOUR MIND UP UNLESS YOU ARE A FAN-BWAY

Well the only thing olding back dx10.1 is the pressure Nvidia does on developers not to use it. Assassin’s creed is an example, lets wait for diablo III and see if they will use it in the end. Game developers are really dependant on support from gfx compannies when it comes to new architectures and ways to explore it, so better not mess with the big boys.. worst for us. Go AMD ( although all gfx cards i have are nvidia :S )

  7. Wig Says:

It’s nothing to do with ‘pressure’ from Nvidia, developers simply follow where Nvidia goes, and if they don’t have it on their cards developers will see no point in using it.

Diablo 3 is an nvidia game so it won’t support it, and even if it did, DirectX 11 is now known to be here next year, so by the time directx10.1 has even 2 games with support directx10 will be history.

Wig is clearly paid by nVidia to spread the FUD.

OpenGL was poorly supported in desktop video cards when id released Quake. Didn’t stop ‘em then. What’s stopping them now?

    To clarify:

comment #4, Wig: “DX10.1? There are no games that support it, so why would they add it.”

comment #7, Wig: “It’s nothing to do with ‘pressure’ from Nvidia, developers simply follow where Nvidia goes, and if they don’t have it on their cards developers will see no point in using it.”

So… there is no A because there is no B. And… there is no B because there is no A.

hoohoo are you saying bcoz nvidia don’t want us to use DX 10.1 we shouldn’t, including the game developers (don’t be an idiot) DX 10.1 is clearly better than 9 in many ways as will DX 11. nvidia cant continue pressuring games to use DX 9 because it only worked bcoz vista was a flop so there was no point in using DX 10… but its a different story in the next 2/3 years as nvidia wont matter anymore what it recommends as everyone will go with the new ms system, rather than a nvidia card saying otherwise (nvidia already said they will go with DX 11 when Microsoft does)

the operating system decides not stupid nvidia
