AMD roadmap discussion: no new chipset to surprise us

AMD motherboard Roadmap 2009

As you all may know, AMD will launch their 45nm product in the beginning of 2009, it is more slower than Intel but better than nothing. But in another part of their roadmap they did not show us any good improvement on mobo.

Guess AMD have put all their resources on CPU and GPU development, no time to care chipset, because what we read is they just refurbished old chipsets, make some changes to let those chips support new AM3 CPU an put them on sale.Β  Look, In Enthusiast market the next gen chipset will be RD890, which is a upgraded RD790 we saw on a 790FX mobo. The only improvement of RD890 is AM3 ready and improved Crossfire support.

Other than RD890, all other chipsets are IGP (integrated Graphic Processor) chipsets. In performance class we can only expect a RS880D, which is a AM3 ready RS780D(790GXοΌ‰ with higher clocks, additional power saving, and video enhancements.

In mainstream, there will be two new chipsets, they are RS880 and RS880C. RS880 is a upgraded RS780(780G) with faster clock and AM3 ready, RS880C is almost the same。

So that’s all AMD chipsets we gonna see in next year’s mobo market, not excite at all.
