Phenom II Outperforms Core 2 in Multimedia Performance?
We released the test of Phenom II gaming performance days ago. Actually in the same document, AMD also unveiled the multimedia performance of Phenom II including iTunes and Mainconcept.
Intel platform features DP35DP motherboard, and AMD platform utilizes MSI K9A2 Platinum. The testing platforms both use HD3870 Graphic cards, Corsair CM2X1024-8500C5 1GX2 and Western Digital 1500ADFD.

Remark: the primary frequency of Intel Core 2 Quad 9400 is 2.66GHz, that of Q9300 is 2.50GHz, and AMD Phenom II is 3.00GHz.
- Apple iTunes (WAV-to-AAC encode) - 7.60.0.29
- MainConcept Encode version 1.0.0.0
- POV-Ray RTR - 3.7 beta 25
- Windows Movie Movie Maker (jpg) Vista 32
- Windows Media Encoder 9 - 8.1.1.0
The document shows that Phenom II 940 processor outperforms Core 2 Q9400/9300 in multimedia performance in most occasions. The above software is also what Intel has been emphasizing. According to the comparison, Phenom II 940 has the highest frequency. Q9400/Q9300 is sold at $266 each 1000 item now (Core i7 920 priced at $284). Itβs expected the pricing of Phenom II 940 could be more favorable.
To be honest, weβre quite doubtful of these figures. But this is everything we got for reference before the real products are available.

Its very misleading because the graphs used a different scaling. Notice how much % difference between Q9300 and Q4000 in those graphs (both only 0.16GHz difference). You can easily map and interpolate known scores, and should be able to guess the real scores.

Is Amd scared? Why no comparison with Core i7? They only compare their products with past generation products Amd better look to the future.

There’s no comparision with Core i7 because it’s not PII main target. PII is targeted to mainstream market, facing the Q9000 series.

Phenom II does not compete against i7, hence the comparison against the “old” Quadies.

As you know,Phenom II idefinitely fit for the βoldβ Quadies.

AMD is claiming the 940 has a slight 5-10% lead over the Q9400, presumably they will be price competitive with the Q9400. Presumably the 940 will not be performance competitive with the core i7, that doesn’t mean other AMD cpus won’t be competitive. Especially with decent AM2 motherboards around $100-$150 ish, and decent core i7 boards at around $300.00, not to mention the DDR2 vs DDR3 price difference. Granted this isn’t the core i7 killer that we’d like, but it looks like a very reasonable CPU.

The HD video encoding graph is even more suspicious. Just look at that % delta, its greater than 6.64% (the clock difference between Q9400 and Q9300)!
Draw a line from Q9300 to Q9400 then towards the PII 940 and you’ll be able to guess how it performs. I would say its about as fast as, or a bit faster than a hypothethical “Q9500″. That would place it behind Q9550. Strange thing is they did not even compare it with Q9450.
Presumeably it will be priced around Q9400 or slightly above.
My 2 cents.

… so a processor that is 20% fast in raw speed is only once 20% faster or greater in the benchmarks shown…
and at worst is only 5% faster…
December 4th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
1 Speed is important but not very importent.
2 Why not put a 3GHZ Quad ? Maybe because the price will be equal to the price of quad q9300/q9400 266$ or less.
3 The q9300/q9400 is half bread only has 6mb of L3 cache insted of 12mb l3 cache of the Q9450 or Q9550.

level 2 cache, off course. level 3 only for nehalem and gallatin (pentium4 extreme) in the intel desktop series.
@topic: nice to see amd keeps producing slides.

Is faster then de old one and works whit the actual matherboards.

NCIX (Canadian site) briefly had prices and sku’s up for the Phenom 920 and 940 yesterday. It was 320ish? for the 920 and $382 for the 940. In comparison, the i7 920 hovers at around $400 Canadian currently, Q9300 at around $300 and Q9400 at around $340 to $370. Note that the Canadian prices though tend to fluctuate more depending on the US/CA dollar exchange rate, which is 1 to 1.25ish in the past week.
