AMD RV775 Ready to Give Nvidia a Punch
We have unveiled lots of details of NVIDIA new-line products (GeForce GTX260, GTX285, GTX295) expected to be out next year. Of course AMD wouldn’t keep quiet always. It has been nearly half a year since RV770 was launched in June. Some websites have reported that AMD will bring out something new – 55nm RV790 (960SP) for transition between 55nm RV770 and 40nm RV870. Is that true?
Couple of days ago we got an email from a mysterious friend from US who would like to leak something new just because he likes our style. We need to keep his name condential, but we’d love to share all the information we’ve got. We won’t make use of this to do any evil things. Considering AMD ever purposely leaked some confusing news about RV770, the following data remains to be confirmed.

According to our source, the stream processors of RV775 will be increased to 840, and TMU increased to 48. It can be concluded that RV775 will feature 168 Stream Processing Units, and every 14 of Stream Processing Units forms a SIMD, so there would be 12 SIMD in total. Every SIMD contains 70 stream processors, which sounds more logical.
But how can this be done? It’s very likely that they have utilized the spare units of RV770, and reform the Stream Processing Units in some special way. AMD RV770 is designed based on repair structures technology. If you have a unit with 10 shader processors, actually build 11. In this way, the spare unit can work should there be a defect. (You could visit Anandtech for more details) During the time when RV770 is sold well, AMD has enough time to improve the rate of good product. But we have no idea about the decrease of transistors.
Basically, the increase of Stream Processors and TMUs would bring positive influence. The improvement of core clock is supposed to be great as well. The core clock of RV775XT goes up sharply from 750MHz (HD4870) to 900MHz, and the memory clock of GDDR5 gets up to 1400MHz(*4). The core clock of RV775Pro has also been upgraded to 725MHz, and memory clock updates to 1400MHz. RV775Pro might be using GDDR4.
Apparently, RV775XT is designed to fight GeForce GTX285 and put NVIDIA into a difficult situation. The informer doesn’t mention 1GB version, but it won’t be a big problem to add another 512MB GDDR5. (it rumors that AMD has ordered all GDDR5 chips that a memory manucturer produces in Q1 and Q2 next year). Probably RV775XT will be branded as Radeon HD5870. Real products are expected to be available late January, just after the new version of GTX200 Series.
AMD will launch RV775Pro in March 2009, while RV870 based on 40nm won’t be out before October 2009. No news indicates AMD will design single-card and dual-core products again, but why not?

omfg, 5870×2 anyone?
jeez, all this new hardware and tech, how does one upgrade now and safely without wasting money?
Honestly guys, technology is moving way too quick these days..

Yeah! punch them where it hurts the most. If i were ATI I would have done it a year ago. lol…

Nothing says you have to have the latest, fastest hardware to run most applications though. You upgrade when you need to or when the price/performance becomes hard to resist. It does seem like they are over doing it with all the revisions, though, especially in video cards and its bound to affect the bottom line somewhere.

I AGREE USE TO UPGRADE ONCE A YEAR NOW ILL FALL BACK TO EVERY OTHER YEAR WITH IT IMPOSSIBLE TO STAY UP WITH THE LATEST AND GREATEST

Well i was expecting the 5870X2 during summer time, but based on rv870 instead, not rv775XTs. Oh well, replacing my 4870X2 will just take three more months, which is not too bad.

Good news. I love ATI/AMD…

You shouldn’t trust every Dr. Who out there. I can’t give you the right information, however I can confirm that these details here are total bs.

5870?… LOL, I doubt that!
Maybe 4870^2… 4875 and 4855.
5000 comes in summer!
Asm, why do you need to stray up with… whateva’ that meant!… ? This move is just to dominate the market ’cause they need profits really badly considering 2009!
I hope it makes 4870 prices go down… a lot! Or maybe it’s just wishful thinking!

HD4870 prices hav reached 190$ already from 299$ launch price. Check fudzilla for the info. How much further down do you want high end gaming prices to go? The max HD4870 will reach at the bottom would be 170$ as my hunch. Lower than that would make it such that AMD ends up owing us everytime they sell a product, not making profits.
And I don’t believe this RV775, cuz it’s confirmed that HD 5800 series is launching in APRIL 09 just after nVidia launches their 40nm GTX350. And HD5870X2 and rumoured HD5870X4 would launch two months after that.

Im glad ATI bringing out something new, now the GTX295 will have to be priced competitively
December 13th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
I intend to upgrade this Jan-March 2009 and seems like upgrading would be a waste since a totally new generation of card will come out at oct 2009.. f*ck it

Price, your a bit off… that price is for one product from newegg if you go on with the MIR scam (as some ppl put it)! Hardly the ideal offer and hardly the proof of overall lower prices! In other countries like here in Romania they still cost over 1000 RON with a buck being 3 RON… do the math! Wen don’t want one-place-in-US-scam-prices, but overall global price cuts!
2nd, “Launching” is one thing… getting it is another.
And not believing that this news could be true because of the 5000 launch date, is again hardly proof that it is false!

Lets see if this card better for folding.
December 13th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Yeah, its too bad ATI doesn’t have any real good step up programs to help out, right? ATI partners and their support… if you can call it that.
I really don’t care if ATI cards perform better until they fix that. But hey, if you have unlimited funds? I get sick of hearing about how good these cards are when you can’t buy one from a company worth buying from. Maybe when XFX starts selling ATI I’ll give them a look.
MIR’s are a joke… if I don’t like the price before rebate I’m not buying it.

Radeon 4900 seems more likely than 5800. Stream count doesn’t look right though…
Maybe just clock bump the 4870 into a 4890? As is, a 20%/40% core/mem increase would see some good gains even without the extra texture or shader units.

Frudo says no… can’t really say how credible he is since he started the article calling people fanboys and not mentioning how or some source.
December 16th, 2008 at 5:36 am
Frudo is a Nvidia arse licking fan boy himself, it figures why he is sour at any good news for ATI

Furthermore, As a researcher into Low power VLSI design at RIT (NY), i can explain it in simple terms as to how lower transistor count can be achieved. The initial design would not have been completely power and logic efficient in its use of transistors, So if new improvement in getting a particular logic block was made which resulted in transistor count reduction, then such a block when repeatedly used can lead to substantial over all transistor count reductions.
A particular logic can be deigned with many varying numbers of transistor counts, some of them maybe lesser transistors but poor in power efficiency, some maybe slower. Its a balance that has to be reached when you design a logic block. Always going for lower transistor count wont fetch you speed or low power operation. And I know both Nvidia and ATI have started using extensive low Vth transistor capping to save power in many blocks.
Like for example a simple carry adder can be designed with 12 transistors or even upto 20 transistors. But the performance of these adders will vary so will their power characteristics.

Fake!!!
December 16th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
What the Fuck!!! This is all fake news. Go to fudzilla and find out. And who wrote this thing. Who? Who?
December 17th, 2008 at 7:42 am
LOL check fudzilla? I trust fudzilla for legit info about as much as the enquirer
