    Hello guys,
I had a funny experience to share. It might help some of you with old, yet unsupported ATi cards.
My card is an old Radeon 9600 which is not on the list of supported cards for the Windors 7 ATi beta drivers.
I tried a few drivers which didn’t work: v8.12 for XP 32 bits, v8.12 for Vista 32 bits, beta drivers for Windows 7.
Maybe in despair i tried to install an old driver i had kept because it was the last one to support the Radeon 9000, the Catalyst Display Driver v6.5 for XP/2k. The installation through the setup does not work but i could install it via the Device Manager. And it does work for me on Windows 7 !!! I can now chose between a wide bunch of resolutions, reach refresh rates like 85 Hz, and so on.
This driver (v6.5) is not absolutely stable, especially on Windows 7 shutdown/reboot/sleep where i systematically get a blue screen. I also experience problems with some games (Starcraft, Portal, …) and there is no video acceleration for video rendering, but it is clearly better to have this driver than nothing, especially if you still have a CRT and you cannot stand 60 Hz.
As Catalyst Display Drivers v6.5 support old cards up to Radeon 7000, there might be a chance you could make there old cards work with this driver.

Why no support for older cards.
I have an x1950gt and have no plans to upgrade the card.
Not everyone needs the latest and greatest and plays lots games etc.

    A little un fair ATI/AMD

  4. JonP Says:

If you don’t need the latest and greatest, why are you complaining? Windows 7 is the latest, and hopefully the greatest.

Regardless, I agree with you that they should support such hardware. Which I’m sure they will. This is a beta afterall.
