Western Digital Enters SSD Market by Acquiring SiliconSystems

Western Digital has completed the acquirement of SiliconSystems at $65 million, which shows WD’s determination to enter into SSD market.

SiliconSystems has operated for years in the embedded SSD market, and held extensive intellectual property. Its product line includes Serial ATA and IDE drivers with 2.5″ and 1.8″ form factors. After becoming WD’s Solid-state Storage business unit, SiliconSystems’ orginal employees will retain their positions. According to Techreport, Western Digital will offer SSDs for the “netbook, client and enterprise markets” instead of consumer SSDs in near future.
