Radeon HD 4770 Media Edition VS Retail Edition

Besides Radeon HD 4770 retail edition, AMD has actually prepared another edition for media’s test. The two editions look quite differently, but perform almost equally. As you can see below, the media edition is designed elegantly with a more effective cooler.

The media edition brings 2-3℃ lower temperature than retail edition, but it causes more noises when the fan runs at maximum speed. Let’s check out together what differences they have. The above one of each group is media edition, and the other one is retail edition.

You have to post a benchmark of this 2 editions and the OC ability.

Yesterday I wrote something like you. In the end I asked for an “independant website” for testing the retail edition.
It would be great to compare the two editions, just to see if there are equal.

It appears that the “Media” edition has extra power regulation (count the regulators and caps on top of card near the back).

Apparently AMD says both designs were available for partners to sell at retail and all of the partners chose the cheap one. So it’s not deliberate.

  5. Ordinosaure Says:

Possible. For this reason partners can propose this card under 100€ in EU.
However the retail edition offer high performances too.

If I soldered extra capacitors / MOSFETs (obviously i’d use identical values) in the blank spaces, would it make any difference to the performance/over clock?

It frustrates me to see such large differences between the two cards, when including the extra components would probably only cost a few cents more at the manufacturing stage.
I have a lot of experience in electronics and soldering so this would be v. easy for me to do.
