S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat DirectX 10 vs. DirectX 11

Last week the GSC officially launched the benchmark of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat which enables you to find out how well your system is balanced for gaming and the game in particular.
As you see, the interface looks quite simple, and advanced options are also available at the bottom-right corner.

After enabling tessellation and contact hardening shadows, let’s try to find out the performance difference between DirectX 10 and DirectX 11.
Test bed:
CPU: Intel Core i7-920 (4GHz)
Motherboard: Asus Rampage II Extreme
Memory: G.Skill DDR3-1600 2GB*3
Graphics card: Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 & 5770
Driver: Catalyst 9.11 WHQL
Operating system: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Benchmark settings:
Preset: Ultra
Video mode: 1920*1200
MSAA: 4X
SSAO Mode: HDAO
SSAO Qaulity: Ultra

Radeon HD 5770 in DX11 mode

Radeon HD 5770 in DX10 mode

Radeon HD 5870 in DX11 mode

Radeon HD 5870 in DX10 mode
According to our test, the Radeon HD 5770 run not fast enough at highest settings, with just an average frame of 20FPS, while Radeon HD 5870 got around 30FPS steadily. The performance in DX11 mode is faster than the DX10 mode.
I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

As you can tell, the shadows of objects look more natural in DX11 mode, while appearing to be deeper and harder in DX11 mode. Additionally, the clothes in DX11 mode show more details than the DX10 mode.

Regardless of some performance sacrifice, the visual effects have improved a lot in DX11 mode with Tessellation enabled. If you take a closer look, you’ll find that the respirator in the right picture looks “fatter”, and you can see the textures much more clearly.

DX11 also offers better graphics effects in the long-distance shots.
As the only DX11 game which is really available now, Call of Pripyat has started to shown us some benefits that DX11 brings. It’s believed that we’ll see more and more titles to support DirectX 11 in the coming year.

The game is a lot better on DX11 cause you see textures a bit sharper. LOLL!!!!
Should’ve shown some DX9 pics to see a real difference maybe.

He’s not only fatter (or was it more muscular) in dx11, but also less polygonized. Look at the outline of his left (the one on the right;) arm for example. Tesselation, I welcome thee holeheartedly!

Got my hands on this game, must say I am disappointed. Nature (trees, grass, terrain) look like scum. This is still far away from Crysis. AMD must be dumb to support such scum cos its like flushing DirectX11 down the toilet.

You either love this game or hate it

And if you look @ the FPS, it runs poorly for that kind of quality. There are no DX11 advantages, just a bit different textures. No fun things like vehicles, not to mention the fact that these broken vehicles have also very, very poor graphics. Crysis, FarCry 2, GTA IV and even that Nvidia’s Batman look more tesselation. After CoP and Dirt 2, I have to say that Nvidia was right about it, DX11 is not that important afterall.

Amen. When I first saw this game not knowing it was dx11 I thought it was running in dx9, until the reviewer in the video said it was dx11, a WTH moment ensued.
