Intel: Initial Larrabee Graphics Chip Canceled

Larrabee, which was originally expected to appear in 2008, has been delayed for multi times. To make things even worse, the graphics processor has just been confirmed to initially appear as a software development platform, according to Cnet.

“Larrabee silicon and software development are behind where we hoped to be at this point in the project,” Intel spokesman Nick Knupffer said Friday, “As a result, our first Larrabee product will not be launched as a standalone discrete graphics product.”

“Rather, it will be used for a software development platform for internal and external use,” he added.

Unfortunately, Knupffer failed to mention when Larrabee will be launched as a graphics processor.

Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research, said Intel is not hitting performance targets – The chip giant demonstrated Larrabee hitting one teraflop at the SC09 last month, which is far inferior to many graphics products offered by AMD. And NVIDIA is going to debut their Fermi-based products early next year, leaving even less standing room for Intel.

Too bad they can’t compete with a software-company. :P But serious, always thought it was going to be vaporware. Just like the Intel 740 back in the day, Intel’s GPU cards couldn’t keep up with the competition. ATI’s latest cards easily pull 2 Teraflops and NVidia likewise but than the half of that. Intel’s Larrabee only 500 gigaflops and with overclock 1 teraflops.

Back to the drawingboards, better luck next year.

Hello! Do you know if they make any plugins to help with SEO? I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good gains. If you know of any please share. Cheers!
