Samsung to Offer 1Gb XDR DRAM

Elpida’s 1Gb XDR DRAM

Rambus on Friday said that Samsung Electronics would offer a 1Gb XDR DRAM memory device.

Samsung and Elpida are the only suppliers of XDR since Qimonda stopped production. With clock-speeds of 3.20GHz to 6.40GHz, XDR memory chips are currently mostly used on PlayStation 3 game systems.

Samsung’s 1Gb XDR DRAM device is expected to broaden the availability of XDR technology for gaming, computing, and consumer electronics applications.

Any chance that we’ll see this on future video cards? Hey, a guy can dream =D

@Mathieu Bourgie: I believe that the SpursEngine (based on Cell-CPU) is already using this kind of memory to enhance SD-video to HD. Toshiba is already integrating these XDR side-memorymodules and the SpursEngine in its high-end laptops.

But as you said, hopefully we’ll see these on videocards =) I remember when GDDR4 was introduced and like a handful of cards was introduced with GDDR4. It totally sucked.
