NVIDIA 196.75 Drivers Cause Overheat Problems

Just three days after NVIDIA released the GeForce/ION drivers version 196.75, the driver is found working unproperly.

The Battle.net has just revealed that users have gotten intermittent low FPS after installing the drivers. It’s said to be related to the fan control and causing the video card to overheat on 3D applications. The affected games include Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft and StarCraft 2 Beta.

In order to check out if it’s true, we also installed the 196.75 driver, and tried to run StarCraft 2. Something was getting wrong with the fan control – it remained at 40% all the way, while the GPU temperature reached horribly 80โ„ƒ.

NVIDIA hasn’t commented on this yet, but the drivers download links have been deleted. We suggest you to uninstall the drivers before the company manages to fix this.

    Hmmm…. this is the second driver bug after the previous doesn’t allow shader overclock. If this continue to third times with the lauch of GTX 4xx that is was fatal to Nvidia.

    I am first worried about my VGA after reading this. I am trying to use GPU-Z to monitoring the temperature and using Nvidia Control Panel with priview to simple test the temprature. It took a long few minutes to realize that my VGA is using PASIVE COOLING (as always, panic first, think letter). My Gigabyte 7300 LE that using passive cooling I think will be safe from this bug.

    There are many reasons I don’t update my drivers…

    This is one of them.

    I’m beginning to question the quality of Nvidia drivers. I’ve owned both ATI and Nvidia cards, and ATI drivers are pretty good despite people saying they’re not.

    This is a lie or rumor, my 260gtx doesn’t overheat. My highest temp is 73C after playing Crysis for hours.

    @csq2
    sure..
    tell that to the poor mugs that fried their GPUs.

    ATI has never had drivers that would kill your card. Broken mobile gpus, Fermi, drivers, what is going on with Nvidia? Oh well, I am so happy with my 5870 ATI card. Nvidia’s inferior hardware and drivers are no match for it.
