Elpida Intros the World’s Smallest 2-Gigabit DDR2 Mobile RAM

Japan’s leading global supplier of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM)——Elpida, today announced that it had developed a 2-Gigabit DDR2 Mobile RAM™, the world’s smallest LPDDR2 chip. The new DDR2 is expected to become the main product manufactured by the 40nm process line at Elpida’s Hiroshima Plant (the 40nm line is currently undergoing a capacity expansion).

The new 2Gb DDR2 Mobile RAM mainly target the smart phone and tablet PCs, which featuring low operating voltage of 1.2V, transfer rate up to 1066Mbps, the 64-bit systems can transfer 8.5GB of data per second, the power consumption reduces by 30% than its own 50nm products.

Elpida plans to ship the new DDR2 as die or for PoP and FBGA packages, the latter package with die stacking technology to provide an extensive line-up of 2Gb to 8Gb of products to meet various customer needs.

It is expected to have sample shipments of the new 2Gb DDR2 memory in August, and mass production are available in September.
