Intel to Announce Next-generation Desktop Platform at CES 2011

While AMD plans to release its first Fusion-based processor Ontario by the end of this year, Intel is going to ship the next-generation 6-series chipsets (Cougar Point) in the 42nd week of 2010 (October 2010), according to Digitimes.

Intel is believed to officially announce its new Sugar Bay desktop platform at CES 2011, including a Sandy Bridge-based processor, featuring a quad=core CPU and integrated GPU, and will be paired with P67 chipset-based motherboards, targeting mainstream markets.

The new platform will support the latest Hyper-Threading and Advanced Turbo Boost technologies. The company will launch more Sandy Bridge models with unlocked multipliers and dual-cores.

Intel will also launch the higher-end Waimea Bay platform to replace the Tylersburg. Waimea Bay consists of a Sandy Bridge E-based processor and Patsburg-based motherboard. Sandy Bridge E will feature an integrated memory controller and PCI Express connection, and support memory up to DDR3 2666.

For the server segment, Intel will introduce the Bromolow platform which also employs Sandy Bridge processors. In the 50th week of 2010 Intel will start shipping the Huron River platform for notebooks and the related products are expected to hit the channel after mid January 2011.
