New Feature Of Radeon HD 6800 Series Graphics Cards:MLAA Technology

Although Radeon HD 6800 series graphics cards don’t adopt the brand-new architecture,it brings many new characteristics for users along with performance improvement.

AMD introduces a brand-new AA model,codenamed MLAA(Morphological Antialiasing).

MLAA adopts Post-filtering mechanism,which seeks for image edge for smooth dealing.The biggest feature of this technology is that it won’t bring excessive burden for system even with many blend edge colors,and its effect is close to 8xMSAA.

As MLAA adopts Post-filtering mechanism,it’s unavoidable that it exists Nyquist Limits,when the displaying surpasses the limit of Nquist,image color blend with each other,it will cause image distoration.In addition,the technology is helpless to the lost information in the case of rasterization.

From Catalyst 10.10a Hotfix driver,AMD adds  "Morphological filtering" in the AA option,that’s to say,we can enable MLAA technology when using Radeon HD 6800 series graphics cards.

Now we have a test toward MLAA technology,let’s see what extent the performance will drop and how much the image will improve.

At the beginning of our test,due to the imperfection of driver,MLAA is not effective in all the mainstream games,so we only chose RTS game-Warhammer40K:Dawn of War II (API DirectX 9.0c) for the test.In addition,we enabled 2x/4x/8xMSAA and MLAA,respectively.

From the test result,compared with NoAA,performance was 43.69% lower when enabling MLAA,much performance loss when enabling 2xMSAA and 4xMSAA,3 frames lower when enabling 8xMSAA.

Now let’s see how the effect of MLAA and MSAA in the game.(The following pictures are all 4 times of the original picture.)

Under the NoAA,leaves edge aliasing problem is quite serious.

When enabling MLAA,three is some improvement for edge aliasing problem.

From the gaming screenshots,the effect of MLAA is basically close to 8xMSAA,and they differ not much in the loss of performance.

From the release of Radeon HD 6800 series graphics card,due to the imperfection of driver,MLAA doesn’t work in many many mainstream games.However,in just half a month,AMD successively introduced 4 editions of Catalyst 10.10 Hotfix for bug fixes.Especially in the Catalyst 10.10d Hotfix,there is some improvement in the gaming compatibility towards MLAA to solve problem of enabling void.

We believe that as the driver is improved constantly,AMD will have a further way to go.

    honestly, i can’t tell the differenct between 4xaa and mlaa in the screenshots.
