Bulldozer Hotfixes Test & Conclusion

The test bed included AMD FX-8150, Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7 motherboard, dual-channel DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24 memory and AMD Radeon HD 7970, we mainly tested CPU theoretical performance, thread-supported software and some games.

Here we emphasized the selection of the test results, as we have known that performance improvement brought by hotfixes would be limited, 1%-2% promotion may be drowned in test errors, though we excluded the highest and lowest result to minimum test errors, the final result still was affected, so we set over 1.5% performance change as standard for promotion or decreasement.

KB2645594 hotfix test

Directing at function of two hotfixes, we designed two processes. Firstly we installed KB2645594 independently, in order to avoid performance decreasement due to C6 power state, we turned off C6, CNQ and TC, the test was conducted at 3.6GHz standard frequency.

The three items with gray words featured most series performance decreasement, especially WinRAR and PDNbench test, the different value of 13%-30% couldn’t been explained by some test errors, we has conducted repeated installation and uninstalling, the test result was close with big gap.

Judged from the overall test result, the performance upon installation KB2645594 was little change, but in 2-4 threads test, it indeed came with over 2% performance optimization in Fritz, Blender, CINEBench and wPrime test items, the highest could reach 7%, it seemed that optimized thread-scheduling was able to increase performance.

The second test was to keep CPU run in default state, enable energy-saving and TC, we installed KB2645594 firstly, and then KB2646060, which was commonly-used by most people, what would the result be?

Compared with the first test, even it didn’t have obvious performance improvement, no decrease came along, in 2-4 threads test, it featured slightly improvement in wPrime, Fritz, Blender and CINEBench items. The increase range was 2%-7.5%, improving by 4.3% averagely.

As we could see from the above two tests, there came with performance rise/fall upon installation of KB2645594 hotfix, the situation was better if we installed KB2645594 and KB2646060. And therefore, it was recommended to install two hotfixes.

The long-awaited Bulldozer hotfixes finally arrive, our final test proved that they indeed could increase performance, surely the improvement range was small with 4.3% averagely, it mainly displayed in 2-4 threads test, the overall performance was basically unchanged.

According to the official explanation, KB2645594 and KB2646060 mainly optimize Bulldozer CPU thread dispatch pattern in Win7 and Win2008 R2. On the whole, the two hotfixes don’t disappoint us, we can see some performance improvement in some tests, maybe it can be described as "better than nothing". Any other way, such increased performance is free of charge with just a patch.
