HD 7950 Architecture & Specs Previewed

We have just come back from Chinese new year holiday, many people may be still lost in happy festival atmosphere. However, for AMD new war will begin again, the second Radeon HD 7900 series graphics card——HD 7950 based on GCN(Graphics Core Next) architecture launched, the company has introduced two heavyweight products at the beginning/end of in the same month, January 2012 is bound to be the harvest time for the company.

Radeon HD 7950 is based on Tahiti core in Southern family, the performance and positioning are slightly lower than that of HD 7970, actually its basic specs have been confirmed upon the release of HD 7970, but frequency and power consumption were not revealed.

HD 7970 graphics card features 32 compute units, 2048 stream processors, 384-bit memory interface, 8 render back-ends. Compared with HD 7970, HD 7950 has been shielded by four to 28 compute units. The memory interface and render back-ends are not changed, and therefore its stream processors have been decreased from the amount of 2048 to 1792, texture units decrease to 112, keeps 3GB memory with memory interface of 384-bit, as well as 32 ROPs.

ReferenceHD 7950 features frequency of 800MHz/1250MHz, which is not only lower than that of HD 7970, but also lower than 880MHz/1375MHz of HD 6970. Non-reference product has surmounted the limit of 800MHz/1250MHz, our tested XFX R7950 Black Edition Double Dissipation has default frequency of 900MHz/1375MHz, higher than that of HD 6970, and close to HD 7970.
