Ivy Bridge Core i5 3570K Quick Sync 2.0 Performance Test
In our Ivy Bridge IGP performance test, Core i5-3570K integrated with HD Graphics 4000 outperformed Core i5-2500K by nearly 60% in actual gaming performance. That’s to say, there features great improvement with IGP performance, now let’s see another change——Quick Sync 2.0 in Ivy Bridge integrated graphics core.
It has been still some time away from the release of Ivy Bridge, the information on Quick Sync 2.0 is quite limited. As far as we know, Ivy Bridge CPUs will feature enhanced end-to-end video conferencing capabilities. It means that Quick Sync 2.0 will support HD video on-the-fly encoding.

As for transcoding performance, Intel claims that Quick Sync 2.0 will be 1.56 times over the previous generation along with better image. According to our earlier Quick Sync test towards Sandy Bridge, its transcoding performance has gone far beyond other GPU hardware transcoding solution. Now Quick Sync 2.0 attains further improvement, what the gap will be?
In certain condition, the transcoding capability of Ivy Bridge is even twice of that in Sandy Bridge, let’s see the following test to verify whether Quick Sync 2.0 is so amazing as Intel has claimed.
Benchmark Platform & Settings
CPU：Core i5-3570K/Core i5-2500K @3.3GHz
Mobo：Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3
Memory：Apacer DDR3-1333MHz 9-9-9-24 1T 2GB*2
HDD：Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB
OS：Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit (Aero Enabled)
Drivers：Intel Graphics Driver 8.15.10.2598
After several tries, we chose to use CyberLink MediaEspresso for test, we conducted transcoding towards H.264, MPEG-2 and VC-1 videos. The three videos lasted five minutes and forty-three seconds, video bitrate was 10Mbps, frame number was 29.97fps，audio sample rate was 48000 with code rate of 192Kbps.
The output file was 480 MP4/H.264 at 2000Kbps, the frame rate was 24fps，audio format was ACC, audio sample rate was 44100 with code rate of 128Kbps. And we used the self-built resource monitoring tool to record average CPU utilization rate in the course transcoding.
Transcoding Test
When we conducted compression towards MEPG-2 and VC-1, Quick Sync 2.0 supported Core i5-3570K obviously was quicker than i5-2500K, with improvement of 26% and 10%, respectively. In terms of H.264 transcoding, Ivy Bridge was even slower than Sandy Bridge in spite of repeated test, which was supposed to be cause by encoder, as the software has to be updated, it was normal for weak support for Quick Sync 2.0.
Compared with Quick Sync 1.0, Quick Sync 2.0 indeed featured better performance in transcoding, in addition, Ivy Bridge 3570K was still much more efficient than Sandy Bridge 2500K upon pure CPU software transcoding. The frequency of two CPUs was all 3.3GHz, it seemed that the video coding capability of Ivy Bridge was stronger than Sandy Bridge. So Ivy Bridge is not just the process update of Sandy Bridge, but also has some revises in CPU core along with improved same-frequency performance.
As we could see from CPU utilization chart above, upon MPEG-2 transcoding rate, 3570K’s utilization was slightly higher than that of 2500K, and therefore the quicker transcoding speed was thanks to CPU partly. While in VC-1 video transcoding, the utilization of two CPUs was almost the same, so the test proved that there featured improvement with transcoding efficiency of Quick Sync 2.0. As for H.264 transcoding, 3570K’s utilization was one time higher than that of 2500K, but its transcoding time was twice of the latter, evidently the problem also rested with encoder. Hope that the updated version will change the issue.

With regard to images, on the whole the difference between the two was not obvious. If we clicked to a large version, we would find the video transcoded by Ivy Bridge was better in some detail sections, the image was better than that of Sandy Bridge. In terms of file size, it was 85.8MB with Sandy Bridge, while 84.8MB with Ivy Bridge.
Quick Sync technology was introduced along with Sandy Bridge, the supported software was less when it was firstly announced, but its strong transcoding performance soon won hearts of many people, just in one year much software added the support for Quick Sync.
The transcoding engine of Quick Sync 2.0 is more amazing, however, the technology hasn’t been officially released, it’s normal with the current weak support in much software. Nonetheless judged from our test, we could see Quick Sync of IVB is more excellent than that in SNB, we believe that the edge will be greater in the future.

Support for QuickSync 1.0 is horrible.
Apart from ArcSoft and MediaEspresso, there are no other softwares that support QuickSync.
And QuickSync does not work at all in Linux.
