At the beginning of this month, Plextor has displayed its latest M5S series SSDs in Computex 2012, soon we got the SSD. This time M5S doesn’t use Toshiba flash memory but lower-price Micron flash. What about the SSD’s performance?

The shell of M5S is the same as that of M3, the SSD features thickness of 9.5mm (7mm with M3P).
M5S series SSDs are available in the capacities of 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. Here we got is the 128GB model and the model number is PX-128M5S.
Thermal conductive paste at the position of main controller
M5S features Micron flash memory with TSOP package , while the previous Toshiba flash chip has BGA package. And therefore, the PCB has to be redesigned, PX-128M5S’s PCB is capable of installing flash memory in both sides (but one side with PX-128M3).
Main controller, flash memory and cache are moved to the front side of PCB, while at the back PCB there features power supply components.

The main change of M5S series is that it uses Micron ONFI synchronous flash memory instead of Toshiba 24nm Toggle DDR flash. Additionally the flash number is 29F128G08CFAAB, which is the same with that used in Crucial M4 256GB, write flash number is 3000, each chip has capacity of 16GB, totaling the amount of 128GB with eight chips.
