Earlier this week we reported that PCI Express 4.0 would offer at least 300W at the slot, and up to a whopping 400-500W at most. When people are cheering about it, PCI-SIG told TomsHardware that it’s actually incorrect.
The power increase that PCI-E 4.0 brings is not coming directly from X16 slot, but will rely on supplemental power connector.
* PCIe 3.0 max power capabilities: 75W from CEM + 225W from supplemental power connectors = 300W total
* PCIe 4.0 max power capabilities: TBD
New value “P” = 75W from CEM + (P-75)W from supplemental power connectors.
