Samsung has today announced that it had now started mass producing System-on-Chip (SoC) with 10nm FinFET technology, and it was the first company in the industry to do so.
“The industry’s first mass production of 10nm FinFET technology demonstrates our leadership in advanced process technology,” said Jong Shik Yoon, Executive Vice President, Head of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics.
By using the advanced 3D transistor structure along with additional improvements being made to the process technology and design enablement compared to the previous-generation process, the new SoC will provide 27% better performance while cutting down the power consumption by 40%.
As for Samsung’s rivals on the chip-making, TSMC will also launch its 10nm process later this year, and plans for trial production of 7nm in the second quarter of next year. Intel will be slower this time – its 10nm is expected to come out at least next year.
