Prices for 12-inch Blank Wafers to Increase by up to 20% in Q1 2017

With the continuous increase of wafer foundry’s capacity expansion, chipmakers including TSMC, UMC and Micron have been informed by their upstream suppliers for a higher contract price for 12-inch blank silicon wafers.

Due to strong demand for 12-inch blank wafers, wafer suppliers such as Shin-Etsu Chemical, Sumoco and Siltronic have all decided to increase the price for 12-inch blank silicon wafers by up to 20% in the first quarter of 2017.

Even TSMC, who has enjoyed a substantial discount due to its huge demand, will have to accept a lower discount rate quite soon, while UMC and Micron also need to pay 10-20% more for wafers next year.
